AJAX and Japanese. Check your encodings.

Friday, May 26th, 2006

I'm starting to use AJAX more in more in CMS I develop. And that exactly what I was doing today. Had to "optimize" some site for speed. I have created the CMS for the site, using AJAX in parts, but was a little bit too lazy to add AJAX everywhere. So the pages we loading.. well.. fast, but not fast for the client, so I was told to make some optimizations.

Wow… iPod will sense your running style?

Today I got over to this link: Apple Syncs iPod Music tempo to exercise

It looks like Apple has patented a technology which will adjust type on songs played on your iPod to the rhythm of your jogging. And if you look at these - Nike+iPod - developments, the picture becomes pretty clear. Way to go Apple!

Almost got my American visa

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

I've been to Osaka today in order to apply for USA Visa. That is in order to be able to go to Hawaii trip in August this year.
I was actually expecting very strict checking, personnel without a trace of smile on their faces, and overall kind of "WTF you want in our country" attitude. But it was completely different from what I was thinking. Personnel was nice and all went fine actually, except that it took me almost one and half hour to complete the documents check and the interview (there were LOTS of people trying to achieve the same goal as myself ;)

Well now.. if everything goes fine I'll have passport with Visa at the end of next week. Nice :)

Also took some photos :)

Lawsuits et al

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

It's been some time since I was notified that I will be sued by my previous employer. The reason was that I didn't want to sign contract on theirs conditions. Well now.. if they decide to move in this direction - I thought - then I won't sign the contract at all. And notified the company's director about my decision. Since then - silence. Not even a message "OK, we got your messsage".

Nothing. At. All.

The director turned out to be a complete coward it seems. Sure it was kind of natural to think it's easy to attack a foreigner who don't really knows much about law system of the country, let alone the language (and believe me, even my Japanese friends had problem understanding contact I got from the other side before reading it twice). So he decided to do just that - attack me with absolutely lunatic reasons to suit and see what happens. When I successfully fought back he just disappeared. Without a single word. No lawsuit, no nothing. Just bad aftertaste.

Oh well. Good riddance. I'm glad it's all finished. And I kind of feel sorry for the guy.. Leading a company with an attitude like that must not be easy.

.Mac down and "web-sites made easy"

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

I'm a paid subscriber of .Mac service and although I think it IS expensive for what it offers (or at least for what I use it for which is most synchronization of my Macs at home and at work), I do like it.

But man.. I was trying to up a new page to my photo gallery at .Mac and I was unable to do it (unable to read iDisk quota). So I tried to load www.mac.com and the f**king site is down. I guess the server admin is out for lunch or something, or just having some very exciting intercourse with some hot chick right next to a router so who the f**k cares about zillion red lamps and unplugged wires :/

.Mac is down

To hell with it. They'll definitely fix the fucking thing by tomorrow by I needed it today!

MacBook

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

Today one of my co-workers just went to Apple store and bought himself a MacBook. The main reason? His old "toilet seat" iBook refused to boot today :) Well everybody have their own "good reasons" I guess :)

Here's a gallery

New movie from Miyazaki Hayao! "Tales from Earthsea"

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Man I can't wait for this year's July now that I have found out that Miyazaki Hayao is readying his new animation movie - "Tales from Earthsea" (or "Military story of Ged" in direct translation from Japanese).

Looks like the story is based on a book by Ursula K. LeGuin which won SF's Hugo award back in 1970's. I haven't personally had a chance to read the original book although I have read several novels by this author and liked them as I remember. I'm sure Miyazaki will touch our souls again as he does it in every one of his movies.

Here's the link to the official site: ゲド戦記. It's in Japanese, but is pretty nice.

And here is a song you most definitely won't want to miss.

My first recording at radio

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

I've been going to Tokai Radio's head office here in Nagoya to do some recording for some Russian language radio course which will be aired.. well I don't know when yet because I forgot to ask :)

So I have just translated some simple dialogs from Japanese to Russian, and then me and the radio announcer have made the audio recoding of these dialogs (she speaks Japanese version into the mic and after that I speak the Russian one). Overall, an interesting experience :)

And here are some photos :)
