Inline Google Maps Plugin v2.1 for WordPress

Description:
Displays Google Maps anywhere in your blog page post by just "linking" selected text to a google map. Read on - you won't believe how easy it is!
This plugin IS compatible with Word Press 2.1

Important: the instructions in this post are related to version 2.0 of the plugin. Version 2.1 adds some new advanced settings which are not described in this entry. If you are new to the plugin, please read this blog entry's instructions completely before proceeding to advanced instructions for Inline Google Plugin version 2.1, available at this link.
How to use:
- First, you have to type some text you want to appear inside google map's marker. You can use images inside the text.
- Now, go to Google Maps site, and find the location you want to show:
- Once the location is found, adjust the map to your liking. Set zoom level to the level you want. Set map type. If you want the map to be shown in Hybrid or Satellite mode, click to corresponding button before proceeding to the next step. Make sure the location you want to display is in the center of the map (if you have found the location by street address, you are all set). Once done, click the "Link to this page" link on top right corner of the map:
- Now, check the location bar of your browser. Copy the whole location URL string into clipboard….
- In WordPress, select the text you want to appear inside the map's marker, and add a link to it, using the address from the previous step:
- You're done :)
It would be cool this text to appear inside marker along with an image.
- You can have several maps on the same page or in the same post.
- Default map size is: 500×300 pixels. Currently, the size is global for all maps in the blog. You can change the default size in WordPress admin options panel for the plugin.
- In case the height of the map is set to less than 300 pixels, a smaller version of zoom control will be shown.
Notice: your WordPress encoding must be UTF-8 for everything to work as it should.
Compatibility:
If you have older version of the plugin installed (1.0 thru 1.1), you don't need to uninstall it (in case you have pages which use old display code).

thanks for the comment. There was a bug when google map key was not saved. I have fixed the code - just re-download and install the plugin to fix the problem.

I am no longer getting the error. Still cant get it to work. When I write the post I insert the map address within a link with some text. When I view the post it shows up blank. No map not even the link. Thanks for your help.

if you send me the raw html from your post containing the map which is not rendered (in wordpress editor, just click the "html" button and copy all the text inside), i will have a look and fix it if the problem is with the plugin. my email is: "mike @ this server".
Also, in case you are using some custom theme, there are themes which are not compatible with the plugin (they overwrite the onload handler instead of appending their own functions to it, and my plugin uses the onload handler to initialize the map). But it seems this is not the problem in your case…
anyway, could you send me the raw html for your post so I could look into the code?

Thanks for the update! I was using 1.0, how do I update maps created under 1.0 to 2.0. I know I can leave 1.0 installed, but I would like to just use 2.0 so that I don't need to keep both versions.

i'm afraid, the only thing you can do about it is to convert the old maps to the new ones by hand (from special tags to google maps links). Meaning you have to find the locations again on the google maps site, get a permalink to these maps, and replace the old [gmap...] stuff with the new href stuff.
Shouldn't take much time if you don't have too many maps on your site. But if you're too lazy to do the migration, really the old version is not a resources eater at all, so having 2 versions running at the same time is really not a big problem at all.

the marker is that red water-drop-shaped pointer in the middle of the map, pointing to the location you have set. As of version 2.0, you don't need to use [gmap...] stuff anymore, just follow the instructions in this blog entry and you're all set.

Fabulously easy plugin. Thanks very much.
One slight niggle though. Before your plugin appeared I used to link to Google Maps from the blog page and it offered the possibility of directions to and from the red marker. Now I just get the text I put into the link.
Is there any code I can include in the link to get Google to offer directions, or is there any way I can override the plugin and put an external link (ie the same link) into a blog page to go to the standard Google Maps page for this link and hence get directions to and from my place?

I'm afraid the directions feature is not planned for the plugin as it is now. I might implement the feature sometime in the future, but not in the near one..
Also, I haven't touched the Google Maps API to the point when you can actually add the directions stuff to a map, so can't help you on that because don't know myself how it all supposed to work yet :)

My blog pages are taking some time to load. I see in my source that the javascript for the google maps plugin is in the section of every page.
Is it possible for a future upgrade to only include the code in the posts and/or pages which call google maps.

actually it might be possible to only load the script code on pages where a google map link is present, although I'm really not sure if and when I can possibly implement this feature.
Also, at it is now, the script actually isn't a very big overhead at all for a page. What it basically does is processing all links on the page and searching for google map link patterns. And if found, replaces the pattern with actual google map. The operation is not CPU intensive at all unless you have hundreds of links on a page. Moreover, the loading time of your pages has nothing to do with the script because the script actually fires up _after_ the page was loaded.
Also, you might want to remove the version 1.0 of the plugin from your activated plugins list if you are not using the old 1.x code to generate maps (or you can just sort of "migrate" old maps to new format and deactivate the 1.0 plugin after that). That will save you some (though very-very little) processing overhead and loading time of your pages.

Its great and works for me.
But, sometimes I'd like to have plain text that is link to the GMaps site.
The plugin won't let me do this because it will always convert the plain link to a Google Map.
Is there any way to tell the plugin to convert only some links ?

I was thinking about this plugin.
To be perfect for me, I would suggest this ideas:
1. Only links that have title="gmap" (or something else) will be converted to a map. Otherwise they'll continue to be plain links to the Google Maps web site.
2. It should be possible to manually edit the link tag to add class="myclass" and style="float: right; with: 300; height: 300;" (or something like that) and the JavaScript code will transfer these attributes to the div tag that surrounds the map. Otherwise the defaults should be used. This way who want to hack the HTML can have more control over the layout.

OK, I couldn't wait, so I modified the plugin myself.
The new version is here. I just included a few lines on function mapSearchReplace().
Now the plugin will only convert to maps the links that have a title (3rd input in the link form of the WP editor) set to "googlemap". And style and class attributes manually set on the link will be transfered to the map object.
I hope these changes will be accepted into next version.
This is the most easy to use and useful Google Maps plugin for WordPress.

Though I think I've done everything fine, the map does not show up.
-Installed plubin v2.1
-Set Gmap API key
-Wrote a post with a text link made to the specific google map link.
- But the map would not show up in the post.
Encoding UTF-8.

Hi,
i installed the plugin on my site but the javascript is put in the header of all pages.
I registered the API at /google-earth. But alle page (even the homepage) have the script in the header and then the key is not accepted

what can i do to solve this.

did you enter the key in the plugin settings? It should be in Options > Inline Google Maps tab of WordPress admin panel. If you did, double-check the key (there should be no spaces aroung the key, etc..). Once you enter the correct key, everything will work.

I can't understand why I got it to work on another site, but not mine… I'm in UTF-8, I re-applied for an API key and I see the script in code source of the page, but no map comes up… I'm using the Kubrick theme and tried with another one, but no luck it's not showing much more…

i just checked your site and the link you are trying to feed to the plugin lacks the "ll" parameter (which is latitude/longitude stuff). Your google map links must contain this parameter in order for the plugin to work.
As a possible solution, make sure you have clicked the "Link to this page", and THEN copied the link from the browser. If the "ll" parameter still doesn't appear in the URL, try dragging the map slightly (a pixel left, a pixel right) and copy the URL llink again. Should work.

Hey guys, I'm sorry about being silent lately! :( Way to much work so no time at all for hobby :)
To everybody who is getting only link but no map. This is a problem with either a theme you are using or plugins on your page, which juggle with javascript.
Technically, there could be 2 possible reasons for the problem to happen:
1. some JavaScript on the page is throwing an error while the page is loading.
2. some JavaScript overwrites the page's onload handler with its own function, instead of adding this function to a list of functions which will be called after the page is loaded (and that's when my plugin does its job.
Solutions?
- first of all, although it is defeinitely not an option for most, you can switch your blog's theme. Well, just try to do it temporarily. Of the problem is gone, write to a theme maker and ask to fix the problem since it is the problem with the theme, not the plugin.
- second, if even setting WordPress to default theme doesn't help, you should try and check plugins. For example, disable everything except for Inline Google Maps plugin, and see if map is displayed. If it is, you can try to turn plugins one by one, checking if map is still visible on the page every time. Once it becomes "broken", you have the "winner" :) Write to that plugin's author for a fix (although I tend to think that it is theme writers who are most probably break the plugin, as the plugin writers are more proficient at JavaScript and all related programming stuff)
And sure, your page must be in UTF-8 encoding for everything to work at all.

Hi, thanks for your great work. but I was getting into truble using this plugin.
The probrem is that there are two type of patterns of Google Maps URL.
http://maps.google … works fine, but
http://www.google … dosen't work.
1.access http://www.google.com/
2.click 'Maps'
3.move map and click 'Link to this page'
4.URL field is changed, but the URL is http://www.google…, this URL dose not work.
I hope this plugin will get to allow http://www. type of URLs.

great plugin, but the markerposition is different to the position in Google Maps.
When I put the link in a browser location, the marker is on the right position. When I copy the URL to my blog, the marker has moved to north a little bit.

Is there a (new?) problem that the text and / or picture in the link for the marker doesn't show up in the marker's bubble?
a) I don't see anything in the example above when I click on the marker for the Moscow map?
b) at my own blog, I haven't been able to get the marker's text to display either :-(
Using Firefox and Camino on a Mac - I don't know if that is part of the problem, but I have also looked at my page with MS IE6 on a PC and no text there either. Any ideas what's going wrong for me?

You can see it just turns out a link and no map appears, but then, following these directions for what to put in post (no added image, just words for the pointer) - there appears no place for your 'code' "desc" if i use these examples. Maybe u will get both messages, thanks. claire

I deleted my google maps plugin and installed the one on this site. I got a new API key but still it gives me the same message…

I'm getting an image through, but it seems to be corrupt? It's also telling me my API Key isn't valid for the site but it definitely is. I even got a new one off Google and put that in.

I used this in a previous theme and it worked great. Neverrtheless, I downloaded recently the "highground theme" and for some reasons it does not display the map's marker properly (it shows a white square with some grey in it).
Another problem I have is the "hybrid" mode. Although the "map" and "satellite" mode works fine in the hybrid mode it displays mostly a white background.
Do you have any idea of why does that happend?

Chad, the map looks good. I am using Safari and I am able to view your map not only the controls, although the "map", "satellite", "hybrid" buttons seems to be larger than normal.

I have tried Firefox, Safari 2 and Omniweb with the same results…a gray box, controls that don't work, and oversized buttons, as you noted.

I am wondering if there are other options that I am not aware of? For instance, when I click on the balloon, no geo info comes up, but rather a blank box. Also, there is now way to get directions. Am I missing something?

My text marker is not showing up when I click on the marker. Also the map is not on the correct spot. when I put that same link into a browser it goes to the correct location. But inside the plugin it doesn't work. Any suggestions

I'm testing this plugin, but I was getting an empty box when I click on the marker, as other stated above. I was getting same problem from this site too, in avery browser both on windows and mac. It seems this happens because the javascript read as marker the google own link to the map. I don't know much of javascript, but managed to fix this:
after line 149: if (thehref.title=="nomap") continue;
add a new line: if (thehref.getAttribute("class")=="gmnoprint") continue;
Everything is working for me now, and thanks for the great plugin that saves me ages of coding!

the fix I posted above doesn't work in ie6/win. I hate Javascript. Googling a bit I found a fix, it works at least in firefox and explorer, cannot deep-test now. So DO NOT USE getAttribte, but add the following line after 149:

Hi! Your plugin works great! Out of the box! The only issue I am having is that when I click on the Ballon the "bubble" pops up, but no content is displayed!
Same thing happens, when I click on to the ballon on the top of this site?!
Any Idea?

The fix for the empty bubble bug I've posted above seems to work well in any browser I've tested so far. I've seen that other people still having problems with it, so I will explain again for non tech-savvy:
TO FIX THE BUG THAT CAUSE AN EMPTY BUBBLE TO SHOW UP WHEN THE BALLON IS CLICKED FOLLOW THIS STEPS (this fix is for 2.1 version):
- open gmap_v2.php in a text editor
- locate line 149, which contains: if (thehref.title=="nomap") continue;
- AFTER line 149 add a new line (go after the "continue;" and press enter)
- in the new line write:
if (thehref.className=="gmnoprint") continue;
- save the file and use the plugin, anything seems to work now.
Thanks again to Mike for the plugins, the little time i've spent to fix it was nothing compared to how long would it take me to create the whole thing!

The fix above didnt work for me - I use WP 2.2.3 and GoogleMaps where shown correctly in IE but not at all in FF (controlbox was there, but no map). To debug the error, I disabled all CSS-Files (with Firefox Addon Webdeveloper) and found out, that in order to show googlemaps in FF, I needed to comment out the following line in styles.css in my stylesheet:
Step 1 - find the following line
img {max-width: 100%;}
Step 2 - replace with following line
/* img {max-width: 100%;} */
I am not sure what sideeffects there might be as I am not that good in CSS, but I don´t think there will be severe effects.

In FF everything work great and the map show up
In IE6 only a link show up and no maps.. I've try using the default theme plus more others theme… it all the same result..

It's weird how this is working for so many people and yet I get this error:
ll is not defined
which is normal since the plugin tries to read a 'll' parameter in the map url and there is no such parameter. There is 'sll' which means something else than longitude/latitude.
Here's an example of how a map url looks when you click the 'Link to this page' link:

apparently the issue occurs when you *search* for a particular location… works if look for the location by going direct;y to maps.google.com and just use the maps pan,zoom etc..

Hi Mihai,
yes, the "ll" parameter is not automatically added by Google Maps when you search for an address, and this will lead to problems with the map not being properly displayed using my plugin. The simplest solution is to :
1. Search Google Maps by an address
2. once you found the location, max zoom on it using zoom slider
3. drag the map one pixel and back in order to let google "know" that you have adjusted the panning
4. now, zoom out to the level at which you want the map to be displayed, and get a link for that page
this way you're guaranteed to get the "ll"parameter set in your link and everything should work.
Step 3 is the most important, step 2 is added in order to minimize possible error which can crawl in after you manually dragged the map (say, you dragged left 2 pixels and right 1 pixel - this way you have 1 pixel off from the original location).

Great plug!
I have the problem of the Info Balloon being too big. I have read on several other sites that the balloon is made "upstream" of any plug-in by the Google App based on the size of the displayed map.
However, I need to display at 240px wide, and the correct map size is displayed by the plug-in, but the balloon is always too wide.
As usual… any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Peter,
The width of the marker if hardcoded into the plugin, but you can change it yourself.
There is the following line in gmaps_v2.php file (line: 111)
var opts = { maxWidth : 300 };
just change the 300 to any value you wish (the value if width of marker in pixels)
