Use a tripod for this? How about the camera settings?

Yep, I was on tripod. Other than that:
- manual focus (thanks for X2's 10x digital zoom live view)
- Aperture: f/5.6
- Shutter: 1/4
- ISO 800
- Focal length: 250mm
plus some sharpening and tuned down black just a little in Aperture (to make sky look really black with no junk floating around :)
